Overview

Shared meals will help provide emergency food and cash assistance, nutrition support and school meals to refugee communities.

Chad hosts one of Africa’s largest and fastest-growing refugee populations – 1.5 million people – while also grappling with a hunger crisis that reaches far beyond the refugee hosting areas of the country. Since the Sudan war began in April 2023, Chad has kept its borders open and welcomed more than 931,000 refugees and over 400,000 returnees, almost all of whom are in need of humanitarian food assistance to survive. The country is also extremely vulnerable to weather shocks, including both catastrophic flooding and droughts. The World Food Programme (WFP) is on the ground providing emergency food and cash assistance to refugee communities. Newly arrived refugees immediately receive food upon checking into camps, and pregnant and breastfeeding women and young children receive nutrition support. Children in schools in refugee-hosting areas also receive school meals to encourage attendance and provide nutritious daily meals. Other programs aim to reduce long-term dependence on humanitarian assistance by boosting agricultural productivity, economic development, food self-sufficiency, market access and nutrition security.
