Shared meals will help families facing hunger and displacement across Sudan

Sudan is experiencing the world's largest hunger and displacement crisis. More than 14 million people have been forced from their homes, while conflict, economic disruption and climate shocks continue to drive hunger across the country. Around 24.6 million people are projected to face crisis levels of hunger or worse, with famine conditions confirmed in some areas. The World Food Programme (WFP) is on the ground, delivering life-saving food and nutrition assistance to families affected by conflict. Each month, WFP reaches between 4 and 5 million people, including communities in some of the hardest-to-reach areas of Sudan. Food assistance, cash support and nutrition programmes help families meet their immediate needs, while specialised nutritious foods support children and mothers at risk of malnutrition. Many of the families receiving support are headed by women who have lost loved ones and are struggling to provide for their children after repeatedly being forced to move. Humanitarian teams have the food, staff and delivery networks needed to reach more people. But severe funding shortages are putting life-saving assistance at risk. Without urgent support, food and nutrition programmes could be reduced while families face escalating conflict, displacement, drought and hunger.

09/01/2025WFP has ramped up its food assistance in hard-to-reach areas of Sudan. The first convoy of food arrived in famine-hit Zamzam camp in November. Further convoys are en route or planned, prioritising areas with famine or at risk of famine.

17/09/2024In August, Chad’s Adre border crossing was reopened. Since the opening, 70 WFP trucks carrying food commodities for around 172,600 people have crossed into the Darfur region. The latest convoy crossed on the 11th of September.

11/08/2024So far in 2024, WFP has supported more than 4 million people across Sudan with food and cash assistance. WFP is also supporting community kitchens in parts of Khartoum through local partners, aiming to provide 100,000 hot meals every month.
