WFP assistance helped reduce the risk of famine across 8 areas in Central & West Darfur, where nearly 1 million people receive WFP food and cash. WFP continues to support community kitchens in Khartoum, delivering around 290,000 meals a month.

Overview

Shared meals will provide food and nutrition support to people fleeing conflict in Sudan.

Following the escalation of conflict in April 2023, Sudan is facing a humanitarian crisis. Around 25 million people across the region do not know where their next meal will come from. In less than a year, Sudan has become the world’s largest displacement crisis. 9 million people have been forced to leave their homes within Sudan, while 1.7 million people have fled to neighbouring South Sudan and Chad. The World Food Programme is on the ground, helping families fleeing the Sudan conflict. WFP is supporting around 6.5 million people with emergency food and nutrition assistance. WFP distributes food boxes - namely cereals, pulses, iodised salt, sorghum (a grain) and oil - or cash support so families are able to make their own food choices. Where possible, programmes also include community projects so people can help restore roads and schools. To combat malnutrition, WFP is providing supplementary food to children under 5 and mothers and has launched Vitamino - a nutrient-rich product to distribute in camps.
