Overview
Shared meals will help provide emergency assistance to Caribbean families affected by Hurricane Melissa.
As Hurricane Melissa moves across the Caribbean the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) is working with governments and partners to help communities prepare for and reduce the storm’s impact. Hurricane Melissa threatens to bring heavy rainfall, strong winds, and flooding across the region. In anticipation, WFP has activated early warning systems, distributed cash and food assistance, and pre-positioned emergency supplies to minimize the storm’s damage, particularly in vulnerable areas of Haiti, Jamaica, Cuba, and the Dominican Republic. These proactive efforts aim to protect livelihoods and prevent loss before disaster strikes, focusing especially on women, children, and the elderly, who are often hardest hit by extreme weather events.
